Be Aware of Hazards

Paddling Mill Creek comes with its challenges. Some hazards are natural, like currents, rocks, narrowing channels, or submerged objects. Others are man-made, such as dams and abutments. Staying alert and prepared will help you navigate these obstacles safely

Avoid Flooded Rivers

Never paddle on flooded rivers. High water conditions increase the danger of hazards like submerged dams, floating debris, and submerged trees, making them far more dangerous. Swift waters are extremely dangerous.

Hazards on Mill Creek

Between the Cedar Lakes Conference Center put-in and the Ripley Water Plant, you’ll encounter a low-water cement cattle bridge crossing the creek. Depending on water levels, this bridge may be completely dry or have swift water flowing over it.

For the safest passage:

  • Stay near the left bank as you paddle over the bridge.
  • Be prepared to exit your kayak or canoe and pull it over the bridge if needed.

Taking these precautions will help you navigate this obstacle safely.

Water Intake Dam Warning

While paddling from the Cedar Lakes Conference Center to the Ripley Water Plant, you’ll encounter a water intake dam used by the plant. This dam presents a dangerous dropdo not attempt to paddle over it!

To navigate safely:

  • Watch for warning signs alerting you that the dam is ahead.
  • There are several safe spots to pull out and carry your craft around the dam.
  • For your convenience, steps leading down to the creek are available near the water plant for exiting.

Please use caution and follow these guidelines to ensure a safe journey.

Strainers

A strainer is a natural obstruction that allows water to flow through but can trap debris and floating logs. Common strainers include:

  • Overhanging branches
  • Downed trees
  • Log jams
  • Flooded islands

This can appear to block your path. To stay safe, avoid strainers. If you encounter a section of the creek that seems unsafe, it’s best to portage — carry your boat around the hazard. Safety always comes first!
