Mill Creek
Safety
Paddling the Mill Creek Water Trail offers a journey through diverse landscapes — from private properties and farmland to city spaces, businesses, and vibrant areas filled with wildlife and native plants. Please help us keep Mill Creek beautiful by leaving it as you found it. We encourage you to follow these simple guidelines for courtesy and water safety.
1. PLAN AHEAD
Check the Weather: Always check the forecast before heading out on the creek.
Time Your Trip: Some sections of Mill Creek can take up to 4 hours to paddle, while others may only take 2 hours. Plan your water and supplies accordingly.
Bring a Buddy: It’s always safer — and more enjoyable — to paddle with a friend in case you need assistance.
Waterproof Your Gear: Pack everything, including your phone, in waterproof bags. If your bag doesn’t float, secure it to your kayak or yourself. Many phones have found their final resting place at the bottom of Mill Creek
2. PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT
Take everything you bring with you when you leave — including paper, cans, and other waste. Consider bringing a small trash bag, not only for your own trash but also to help clean up any litter you find along the way. Every little bit helps keep Mill Creek beautiful!
3. LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND
Preserve Mill Creek’s natural beauty by leaving rocks, plants, and other natural features as you find them.
Avoid Planting Non-Native Species: Bringing in non-native plants can harm the ecosystem.
Respect the Landscape: Refrain from building structures or digging into the banks or sandbars.
Help by Cleaning Up: Feel free to remove any non-native debris like glass, paper, or plastic to keep the creek clean and healthy.
4. RESPECT WILDLIFE
Observe wildlife from a distance.
Never feed animals. Feeding wild animals can damage their health and alter their natural behaviors and exposing them to predators.
Control your dogs at all times or leave them home.
5. BE CONSIDERATE
Respect Others: Be mindful of fellow paddlers and those you encounter along the creek.
Practice Courtesy: A friendly greeting goes a long way.
Embrace Nature’s Peace: Keep voices and noise low to let the natural sounds of Mill Creek shine.
Lastly, but Just as Important:
-
- Wear Sturdy Shoes: Protect your feet by wearing old, tie-up shoes — not flip-flops! The creek bottom is full of sharp rocks and debris that can cause injury.
- Always Wear a Life Jacket: Even in shallow areas, Mill Creek has deep pockets of water where your kayak or canoe could tip. A life jacket is essential for your safety.
